Subject: Urgent: Student concerns over proposed redundancies at GCU

Dear Principal/Vice Chancellor,

I am writing as a concerned student at Glasgow Caledonian University to express my deep worry about the recent announcement of up to 100 job cuts through the Targeted Voluntary Redundancy Scheme.

Our university already has the poorest staff-to-student ratios in the sector, as recent reports have shown. Further staff cuts will inevitably reduce the quality of education, support, and overall student experience that we rely on and hold dear.

We acknowledge the high salaries and benefits awarded to senior executives. During periods of financial hardship, we believe it is only fair to ask whether adjustments at the top could help protect frontline jobs and uphold the academic community that makes GCU unique. 

We strongly encourage you to publicly commit to eliminating compulsory redundancies from consideration. Safeguarding staff roles is crucial not only for their well-being but also for upholding the standards and reputation of our university.

We hope you will listen to your students’ voices and work towards solutions that do not sacrifice the very people who make this institution thrive.
